Introducing Kuntanawa Sananga Rapé

In the heart of Amazonian culture, one of the most revered spiritual tools is Rapé, a finely ground ritualistic powder also known as Shamanic Snuff. This sacred blend harnesses the power of the rainforest’s flora and the ancient medicinal wisdom of Shamans and Pajés, offering both physical healing and spiritual elevation.

At Maya Herbs, we have partnered with the Kuntanawa to create unique and exclusive medicinal and ritualistic snuffs. We are excited to present our latest blend: Kuntanawa Rapé – Sananga!

This blend is made with Sabiá Tobacco, a potent variety of Nicotiana rustica, and ashes from the roots of Tabernaemontana sananho, the same shrub used to make Sananga eye drops. Traditionally, Sananga is used to treat glaucoma, dry eyes, cataracts, and chronic headaches, while also calming the spirit and boosting vital energy.

The Powers Within This Rapé

Tabernaemontana sananho

Commonly known in Brazilian cultures as Sananga or “Forest Eye Drop” (Colírio da Floresta), this Amazon native shrub has been a part of indigenous customs for generations. The root of Sananga is highly valued for its medicinal extracts, which possess aphrodisiac and stimulant properties according to Shamanic principles.

Sananga’s spirit is believed to “read” a person’s energetic imbalances, bringing stability and harmony with nature. It also enhances the third eye, improving color perception and vision sharpness. Amazonian hunters traditionally use Sananga to sharpen their senses before their journeys, helping them better understand others’ intentions and open their hearts and minds to destiny’s blessings.

Sabiá Tobacco

Rope tobacco, a powerful ingredient in indigenous medicines, is a potent variety of Nicotiana rustica. It is commonly known as Sabiá Tobacco (Thrust Tobacco) or Rope Tobacco. The name “Rope Tobacco” comes from its twisted, rope-like appearance, resulting from a process involving harvesting, drying, and fermenting Sabiá tobacco leaves.

According to shamanic culture, Rope Tobacco offers great healing powers for both the spirit and the body, often used in sacred ceremonies and indigenous healing rituals.

The Kuntanawa People

The Kuntanawa, known as the People of the Coconut, are a distinguished community from the Alto Juruá region. They are led by patriarch Milton Gomes da Conceição and his wife, Dona Mariana. The Kuntanawa established the Reserva Extrativista do Alto Juruá, Brazil’s first reserve for descendants of enslaved indigenous people who became rubber extractors. Their mission includes sustainability projects that support their communities, preserve their land, and protect their traditional identity and customs, including Ayahuasca rituals.

In 2008, the Kuntanawa were recognized by the Xicão Xukuru Edition of the Indigenous Culture Award for their project, “Revitalizing and Reclaiming the Kuntanawa People’s Culture.” With support from the State of Acre’s Government and the State Law of Cultural Incentive, they released a collection of songs composed by Kuntanawa youth, led by Milton’s grandson, Haru, who also planned a documentary film.
