Yawanawa Rapé – New Hope: Honoring Tradition and Renewal by Peu Yawanawa

Our Yawanawa Rapé – New Hope is a testament to the resilience and revival of the Yawanawa tribe’s ancestral traditions, crafted with dedication and reverence by a young member of the tribe, Peu. His three-year spiritual journey through traditional practices has endowed him with profound knowledge and expertise, reflected in the exceptional quality of this Rapé. We named this Rapé New Hope many years ago when Peu was still living in the village called Nova Esperança which means new hope in Portuguese. Some years ago he acompanied his in laws to Aldeia Sagrada, Sacred Village, founded on the spot where the Yawanawa lived when they first made contact with the white man. we maintained the name since Peu in his work and message is part of the New Hope of his people that started when Chief Nixiwaka founded Nova Esperança and moved to this at that time new location to make a fresh start with his people!

Cultural Revival

The Yawanawa tribe faced the brink of cultural extinction following centuries of contact, particularly during the last century. However, a transformative movement began in the late 1980s, spearheaded by visionary leaders like the new chief, who staunchly advocated for tribal rights and cultural preservation. They reclaimed their heritage by expelling external influences such as rubber tappers, missionaries, and alcohol from their community.

Renewal and Rebirth

Guided by the wisdom of the last two living medicine men, the new generation, represented by the chief, embarked on a journey of spiritual renewal and cultural revival. Traditional initiation diets and the reintroduction of sacred medicines like Rapé (Rume) and Ayahuasca (Uni) marked a pivotal period of resurgence. The tribe relocated to a new settlement, aptly named “Nova Esperança” (New Hope), symbolizing a fresh start and a brighter future.
